Margaret Long Cole

Fairfield County, Ohio originally encompassed all or parts of present day Knox, Hocking, Licking, Perry, and Pickaway counties.
A militia is a military unit composed of citizens who are called up in time of need.

Margaret Long Cole was born about 1778 in Barree Township, Huntindon County, Pennsylvania. At that time it was in Bedford County. Her father was William Long.

The Long family moved on to Amanda Township, Fairfield County, Ohio in 1806.

She married Joshua Cole on February 16, 1808. They were married by Richard Hooker, J. P. in Amanda Township. Joshua was born on November 7, 1783 in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. His parents were Thomas Cole and Elizabeth Stevens.

Margaret and Joshua's children included:
Calista Cole (1815, married Moses A. Quinn),
Joshua Cole (1819),
William Cole (1820, married Elizabeth Houck),
Joel Cole (1830), and
Mary Elizabeth Cole (1833, married William Bailey).

At the time of the 1820 census, Joshua was in Bloom Township, Fairfield County, Ohio. The household consisted of

a man between 26 and 44 - Joshua age b. 1783, age 37
a woman between 16 and 25 - Margaret b. 1790, age 30
a girl between 10 and 15
a girl under 10 - Calista 1815
4 boys under 10 - Joshua 1819, William 1820

During the War of 1812, John and Thomas Long were members of Ensign Peter Huber's Company of the Ohio militia. Also serving in this company was Corporal Joshua Cole.

In 1830 they were still in Bloom. The household consisted of

a man between 40 and 49 - Joshua age 47
a woman between 30 and 39 - Margaret age 40
a girl and 2 boys between 15 and 19 - Calista, Joshua, William
2 boys betwen 10 and 14
a girl and a boy between 5 and 9
a girl and a boy under 5 - Joel 1830

About 1835 they moved to Richland Township, Wyandot County, Ohio.

In 184o the household in Richland, Hancock County, Ohio consisted of

a man between 50 and 59 - Joshua
a woman between 50 and 59 - Margaret
2 men between 20 and 29 Joshua, and William
a girl and a boy betwen 15 and 19
a girl and a boy between 5 and 9

Bedford County, Pennsylvania was created on March 9, 1771 from part of Cumberland County.

In the War of 1812 (1812-1815) the United States declared war on England because of trade restrictions, impressment, and British support for Indian attacks. They signed the Treaty of Ghent on December 24, 1814 after reaching a stalemate.
